Relocation Service: The Basque Woman and Farmhouse (Caserío) – Landetxo Goikoa (Mungia)

In the Basque Country, the woman’s role has been fundamental in the development of farmhouses (caserío). The woman, in Basque cultural context, has a key role not observed in other cultural sites of Western Europe. The Baserri (Caserío) represents not only the nucleus where a way of life is articulated, but also a very special way of relating with the environment. These rural women worked in the countryside, covered their tasks in the home and in the family. It should also be noted, the religious rituals carried out by the etxekoandre(1), in charge of the spiritual labour related to the family, as well as preserving the memory of ancestors.
Owing to that, we invite you to visit Landetxo Goikoa-Olentzeroren Baserria (eldest farmhouse in Bizkaia), where we will learn about midwives and herboleras(2), women of “science”. These had deep knowledge to preserve the whole society’s health. They also had the responsibility of transferring their knowledge to the female generations. Thus, they were respected and worshipped women. Apart from visiting the Baserri, we propose you to take part in different workshops to experience and know more about them, making soap, essential oils and unguents from medicinal plants.
(1) Etxekoandre: matriarchal, housewife, economy and sociocultural manager.
(2) Herbolera: women who used herbs to heal.
