The Provincial Council of Bizkaia has signed a collaboration agreement with the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) of University College London (UCL), directed by the renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato, with the aim of developing a fiscal policy which supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) established in the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations. This is an initial step towards the introduction of the world’s first SDG-oriented tax system.

The aim of this project is not to create a single tax, but rather a tax which covers the entire fiscal system, creating a taxation structure which supports economic growth to cover health, the environment, equality and education.

IIPP will provide a broad overview of public value with respect to economic growth in the province, which will be of vital importance in terms of achieving an inclusive, ecological and sustainable recovery in the region.

In the words of Mr Unai Rementeria, President of Bizkaia Provincial Council, “we cannot grow at any price, in any way. We need a more sustainable and inclusive development”.
