    BCMATERIALS – Basque Centre for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures is an autonomous research center that covers all aspects of research in Functional Materials with advanced Electric, Magnetic and Optical properties; from basic aspects to applications. Special activity is devoted to thin films materials and characterization techniques involving Large International Facilities, such as neutron and synchrotron radiation sources.
    BCMaterials was launched in June 2012 by Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as a research center for Materials, Applications and Nanostructures. The center is included in the BERC’s (Basque excellence Research Centers) network.
    BCMaterials is committed to be an international reference center for research in the area of functional & active materials and nanomaterials. The quality of publications in conjunction with the image and prestige, based on research excellence, staff satisfaction and social responsibility, will endorse international recognition.
    Following the successful completion of its launching phase, BCMaterials is now looking for a new Scientific Director with excellent scientific quality paired with proven human resources leadership that will lead the consolidation of the center for the future years. Applicants will have a background in either physical, chemical or engineering sciences but with a strong commitment to the study of Advanced Materials.
    The Scientific Director should be a person with a proven track record in the area of advance materials and at least 15 years research experience after the completion of the PhD. He/ She should also have experience in managing a research institution and have international reputation in the field. The candidates may also demonstrate a record of invited presentations in well-established international conferences, granted projects, awards, prizes etc.
    The position will carry competitive salary and excellent conditions of work. The envisaged starting date of the position will be autumn 2017 (or at the earliest convenience of the appointed candidate).
    Only researchers with a solid research track, senior level and international research experience will be considered.



    Main functions

    Reporting to the Board of Trustees and to the Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) of BCMaterials, and assisted by the Managing Director and the Management Committee of the center, the Scientific Director, as leader of the research center will:
    • Implement the current strategy for the 2018 – 2021 period.
    • Define the long term research strategy and research lines of BCMaterials.
    • Propose and deploy the annual scientific plan of the center.
    • Set and be responsible for the accomplishment of the overall objectives of the center.
    • Obtain national and international research funding.
    • Identify and attract the necessary research personnel at senior and junior level, with a special commitment to coaching, mentoring and development of Research Line leaders.
    • Develop the international research connections of the center.
    • Be capable and skilled at media relations and public speaking with both scientific and lay audiences.



    Requisites

    Recognised scientific excellence in the field of advance materials:
    • The Scientific Director should be a person with a proven track record in the area of advance materials and at least 15 years research experience after the completion of the PhD.
    • Leadership in human resources in science – at least 5 years track record in managing science and research teams on various levels and skills and experience in supporting and nurturing new scientists.

    Advanced and multifunctional materials are increasingly being implemented in large variety of applications. Multifunctionality, processability and low environmental impact are the key words related to materials in the near future. The present work plan will develop multifunctional materials form silk fibroin, a nontoxicity, biocompatible and biodegradable natural protein with large potential to substitute many petrochemical based materials. Silk fibroin will be prepared in a variety of shapes, nanocomposites will be prepared, the physico-chemical properties of the material analyzed and the best material will be implemented into functional devices.

    Silk is a fibrous protein produced by a variety of insects as the Bombyx mori. It represents a unique and important class of structural proteins in nature. Silk Fibroin (SF) is the protein that forms the filaments of silkworm silk. These filaments are being reassessed as biomaterial scaffolds due to their unique mechanical properties, opportunities for genetic tailoring of structure and thus function.

    Silk fibroin has become a research hotspot because of its nontoxicity, excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability with the potential to replace current petrochemical-based materials from the view of economic and ecological impacts. Silk Fibroin fibers can be resolubilized into regenerated silk solution, allowing to produce a number of different geometrical structures.

    Thus, silk fibroin can be applied in biomedical domains and as active components in optics and photonics devices, flexible electronic devices and sensors.

    To improve the results of silk fibroin applications are desirable new types of hybrid-silk fibroin materials with an improved mechanical properties and abilities to respond to an external stimulus that allows manipulation during fabrication and post fabrication.

    The potential impact of the present research is extremely high as a natural polymer will be understood and tailored to serve as base for advanced technological applications. It is related to the BCM research lines of advanced functional materials and devices.

    A three years full-time position exists for a pre-doctoral researcher within the functional materials and integration research group in BCMaterials, an independent research centre in active and functional materials located near Bilbao in the Basque Country, north of Spain.

    Silk fibroin will be processed in a variety of shapes, from microspheres to electrospun membranes, passing through films and three dimensional patterned structures;
    Tailored composites with magnetic and electrically conductive nanofillers will be prepared;

    Selected materials will be applied to tissue engineering applications and to sensor and actuator applications

    The development of a miniaturised system able to specifically detect low amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a demand to prevent health problems. In this context, in this project it is proposed the development of a Metal Organic Framework (MOF)-based smart hybrid surface using a high sensitive magneto-active mechanism of support (magnetoelastic resonators) that will represent a wireless detection system with fast response times and suitable for mass production. Some MOFs present a selective adsorption capacity to specific compounds. In parallel, the magnetic resonance of magnetoelastic resonators based on magnetostrictive metallic glasses is affected by the mass variation of the resonator. Micro-resonators of ferromagnetic alloys will be prepared by sputtering and posteriorly functionalised with MOFs and used in the detection of VOCs. This consists in a multidisciplinary work where the IMaCris/MaKrisl and Magnetism and Magnetic materials research groups of BCMaterials and UPV/EHU will closely collaborate. The innovation of this project is based on the use of magnetoelastic technology for rapid and easy highly sensitive VOCs quantification tests. From a fundamental point of view, the crystallographic and magnetic study of the MOFs coating, and the determination of MOF-VOCs interactions will be key points to uncover in order to understand and improve the VOCs detection. This project will provide a broad knowledge in a wide range of disciplines (physics, chemistry, crystallography) as required in the interdisciplinary area of functional materials, including the use of large scale research facilities (synchrotron radiation and neutron sources).

    Produce, optimize and characterize the magneto-elastic resonators obtained by melt-spinning.and the micro magneto-elastic resonators obtained by sputtering techniques.
    Synthesize and characterize a MOF selective to a specific VOC.
    Deposite MOFs on the previously prepared magneto-elastic resonators.
    Detection of the specific VOC by the variation of the magnetoelastic resonance of the resonator and determination of MOF-VOCs interaction.
    Performe research secondments in internations laboratories.
    Disseminate the results by submission of papers and participation in international conferences.
    After the three years period, he/she must fulfil the requirements to obtain a PhD degree on Materials Science and Technology at the University of the Basque Country.     A number of printing technologies have been developed allowing to print functional materials such as sensors, actuators and multifunctional structural parts. Despite this favorable context 2D and 3D printing technologies lack from a variety of materials with specific properties to be printed, allowing to improve operation life time, specificity and functionality. These limitations must be addressed to meet the requirements of industrial applications. This project will tackle the fabrication of a new generation of printable UV curable pure polymers and composites with tailored properties and functionalities by 2D and 3D printing technologies. Novel magnetic, semiconductor and dielectric inks will be developed, fully characterized and integrated into functional devices.

    Close related to the strong evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, smart and multifunctional materials are a key driving force for the development of wireless, sustainable and interconnected autonomous smart systems. Printing of smart and multifunctional materials, besides allowing a more environmental friendly production and implementation into devices, also offers several advantages over other large-scale production methods, such as patterning capability, high speed, low cost, possibility of room temperature operation, applicability to large areas and flexible substrates and ability to produce specific parts with complex geometries at low costs. Polymers offer several advantages for printable smart and multifunctional materials based technologies, as they are relatively low cost materials, are more versatile than inorganic materials, their fabrication techniques are simple, can be printed on various types of substrates and there is a wide possibility of tailoring molecular structure and side-chains, introduce charged or neutral particles, and even grains with specific properties into the bulk material or on its surface region (polymer composites), enabling materials to be produced with specific physical and chemical properties[3].Despite the large maturity of 2D and 3D printed technologies, the number of materials with suitable properties to be printed is still small. Further, most of those materials are printed after melting or solvent based processes, limiting fabrication speed, definition and the introduction of specific functionalities. Those drawbacks can be overcome by the development of a new generation of multifunctional UV curable inks for 2D and 3D printing technologies.

    Thus, the main objective of the present project is to develop a new generation of optimized UV curable 2D and 3D printable smart and multifunctional materials, fully characterize them and implement them into functional devices, as a suitable proof of concept.

    This project will have a large impact both in the scientific and industrial communities as those materials are increasingly needed for the growing field of additive manufacturing.

    Inspired by the several natural processes, in which functional biomolecules posses highly hierarchical structures able to perform various functions in our body; as tissue formation, wood recovery and expansion-contraction motion; multi stimuli-responsive hydrogels with shape memory and self-healable properties are attracting a widespread interest.

    Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are polymeric materials that are capable of fixing one or more temporary shapes (dual or multiple shape memory effect) and recovering the permanent shape in response to external stimuli. Thermo-responsive SMPs are the most classic of these materials in which glass transition or melting temperature of the polymers are exploited and the shape recovery is induced by heat. However, though thermal-responsive SMPs have been widely used in many applications in several fields, such as biomedical, soft robotics and textile, they show a limited stimuli-responsive capability, indeed, high temperature conditions are required in most cases and they have already been extensively studied. On the contrary, supramolecular shape memory hydrogels (SSMHs) are emerging as promising materials with a multi-response behavior. In SSMHs supramolecular interactions and dynamic covalent bond act as temporary switchings leading to excellent cycled shape memory effects at room temperature and permit more than one triggering stimulus that can be used to induce different shape memory actions. Supramolecular interactions undergo recovery process through dynamic dissociation and recombination of non-covalent interaction including, hydrogen bonds, host-guest interactions and metal-ligand coordination, while the dynamic covalent bonds are accomplished by stimuli-controllable uncoupling and recoupling of phenyloronic acid-diol interactions and Schiff base linkages.

    On the other hand, hydrogels, conventionally, are flexible and weak, which are valuable properties for biomedical applications. However, they can be easily damaged by cracks or totally broken under external force, which could avoid their long-time application. Interestingly, self-healing behavior that can rapidly repair the splits or fractured surfaces automatically once the damage occurs, can be developed by means of the same driven forces to the shape memory effect; hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and reversible covalent bonds, among others. Due to this, a specific design of the cross-linking involved in hydrogels formation could allow the fabrication of different multi-responsive materials with dual shape memory and self-healing behavior.

    Furthermore, since biomedicine is one of the most application fields of these materials, other important challenge of these project will be the improvement of the biological properties of the designed materials, obtaining antibacterial and non-cytotoxic hydrogels in addition to their shape memory and self-healing properties.

    Synthesis of triple functionalized hydrogels by adding other stimuli-responsive group with different trigger than the previously studied systems.

    Characterization of the biological properties of the developed materials (antibacterial and cytotoxicity)

    Magnetic nanoparticle-based applications are emerging in the biomedical area due to their great potential to improve sensor sensibilities and localized therapies. The long-distance action of magnetic fields on magnetic materials provides a powerful tool to manipulate magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) loaded with cancer biomarkers, proteins, DNA, etc. Moreover, these MNP can be detected by magneto-resistance sensors, which exhibit much higher sensibility than conventional sensors. These emerging techniques may have a remarkable impact for an early stage detection of grave and lethal diseases.

    This three year project investigates the potential of magnetic nanodisks for the detection of cancer biomarkers using giant magneto-resistance (GMR) sensors. In addition, a novel therapeutic technique, based on the magneto-mechanical action of nanodisks, will be also investigated in-vitro experiments with tumoral cells.



    Main functions

    It is a multidisciplinary project involving physicists, chemists, and medical doctors from international institutions. Therefore, the Ph.D. student will have to:

    Fabricate nanodisks patterns using lithography techniques.
    Deposit magnetic materials by evaporation and sputtering techniques.

    Magnetotactic bacteria contain nanometer sized magnetic crystals (magnetosomes) generally composed of magnetite, Fe3O4, that act as internal compass, allowing the bacteria to “sense” the Earth’s magnetic field and navigate accordingly. Since their discovery in 1975, the main interest on these bacteria has been focused on the extraction and use of the magnetosomes for different kinds of biomedical applications, including cancer treatment, due to the high crystallinity and intrinsic biocompatibility of the magnetosomes. However, very recently a few groups have started investigating the possibility of using the bacteria as a whole, instead of the isolated magnetosomes, for more innovative applications.

    Since the magnetotactic bacteria can sense magnetic fields, they can be externally detected, manipulated and guided. Moreover, magnetotactic bacteria use the Earth magnetic field guidance in order to find the low oxygen concentration regions in water that they prefer to live. This is ideal for cancer treatment: since the tumor area is low in oxygen, due to the tumor tendency to rapidly outgrow its blood supply, magnetotactic bacteria would be inherently attracted towards these hypoxic regions of the tumor. Therefore, targeting the tumor area with these bacteria becomes easier and more efficient than with nanoparticles.

    Despite the evident potential, the research on this area is still very preliminary, with only a few labs around the world starting to work on specific problems, such as modeling the movement of the bacteria inside the blood vessels or studying their functionalization with anticancer drugs. Therefore, in order to push forward the implementation of the magnetotactic bacteria in medicine, it is necessary to develop an ambitious research project that contemplates all the steps of the clinical realization process, from the mass culture and functionalization of the bacteria, to their final tests in drug delivery or hyperthermia for in vivo cancer treatment.

    Thus, the main objective of the present project is to use magnetotactic bacteria as micro-robots that can be remotely controlled by external magnetic fields in order to deliver anticancer drugs to glioblastoma cancer cells.

    The interdisciplinary nature of the project will have a strong impact on the PhD student’s career, who will gain skills in different areas including magnetism, microbiology, cell biology, electrical engineering, etc. During the project, the student will also participate in a network of different national and international collaborators. Besides, complementary skills in management, communication, transfer of knowledge and teamwork will also be obtained.     Culture different species of magnetotactic bacteria
    Functionalize the bacteria with tumor ligands and anticancer drugs for drug delivery
    Analyze the interaction of MTB with glioblastoma cancer cell lines
    Develop and implement a homemade setup composed of a microfluidic chip + magnetotaxis platform + hyperthermia system + optical microscope for in-situ monitorization, magnetic control, and heat release activation
    Carry out in-vitro drug-delivery tests in glioblastoma cancer cells
    After the three years period, he/she must fulfil the requirements to obtain a PhD degree on Materials Science and Technology at the University of the Basque Country.     Different types of biosensors use magnetic particles as a mean to drive, concentrate and detect analytes of interest, such as proteins, DNA or other biological markers, adequately binded to functionalized particles. The magnetic detection offers some advantages over optical or electrical sensing, because of the essentially null magnetic background of the biological species. Assuming that one of the key goals for a practical biosensor is to be small, the range of types of magnetometers that can be used to detect the stray field of magnetic particles is restricted mainly to giant magneto-resistance (GMR, including spin valves), hall and integrated micro fluxgates sensors. Additionally, the magneto-impedance (MI) effect has demonstrated its capacity to detect the presence of magnetic particles with a sensibility to small magnetic fields at least comparable to the sensors mentioned above. Permalloy-based thin-film MI structures have been shown to present excellent performance together with an easy patterning by photolithography and direct integration with the rest of the components of the sensor, including microfluidics and electronic conditioning circuits.
    Up to now, however, the great majority of works proposing MI as a detection mechanism for magnetic particles cannot detect directly their stray field. These works reveal a great disparity of results and there is no consensus on the origin of the MI sensitivity to the particles. We have recently demonstrated that the effective permeability of the particle-containing system, and its influence on the electromagnetic behavior of the sensing material, can account for the experimental results. Also, the pattering of the surface of the MI materials can increase the sensitivity.
    We propose in this project to study both types of detection based on the MI effect, oriented to the application in biosensors. In this sense, the detection can be designed to be static in which the magnetic particle used as label and carrier is immobilized in the area of detection where the magnetometer measures the presence, and eventually the concentration, of the particles. Alternatively, a dynamic approach attempts to detect the particles while they are moving over the sensor. A combined and simpler approach is the use of lateral flow tests, in which the analyte reaches the detection zone by capillarity, and the measurement can be performed statically in a dedicated reader.

    There is an imperative demand for the development of low cost and high performance
    solar cells to allow sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels . As a cost effective
    alternative to silicon based photovoltaics, newer alternatives have appeared as dyesensitized
    solar cells (DSSC) which is a photovoltaic device based on a photoelectrochemical
    system in which a porous semiconducting TiO2 film with dye molecules
    adsorbed on the surface serve as the working electrode in contact with the I3
    − /I− redox
    shuttle in a nonaqueous solvent for light harvesting and the generation of photo excited
    electrons. To improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE), investigations have been
    focused on the photo anode for light harvesting and electron transfer. Methods to
    improve the PCE include increased light harvesting via localized surface plasmon
    resonance LSPR, fluorescence resonance energy transfer based quantum dots (FRETbased
    QDs), TiO2 film with high surface area to enable sufficient dye loading or the use
    of light-scattering materials (LSMs). Recent progress in PCE of DSSC includes the
    substitution of the semiconducting TiO2 materials by alternative perovskite-like metal
    oxides.
    The aim of this project is the preparation of functional materials for the photoanode in
    order to improve the PCE in DSSC. In particular, LSPR using Au@Ag nanoparticles
    and light-scattering materials will be used for improving light harvesting at the
    photoanode. To control the LSPR properties, control over the size, morphology and
    structure of the nanoparticles is required. For light-scattering materials large specific
    surface area and efficient electron transfer properties will be required. To meet these
    requirements, gold and silver modified titania nanostructures will be synthesized and
    characterized. Based on these nanostructures DSSCs will be fabricated to calculate the
    power conversion efficiency.

    Advanced Materials for Energy Applications in BCMaterials, an independent research
    centre in active and functional materials located in Zamudio near Bilbao.
    The selected candidate will develop a PhD on preparation of titania-Au@Ag
    nanostructures with the following research plan:

    1. Optimization of the synthesis methods to obtain titania-Au@Ag nanostructures,
    as Au@Ag nanoparticles and nanorods modified titania nanoparticles, core-shell
    Au@Ag@TiO2 and hollow structures. In all cases, different sizes and
    morphologies will be analyzed. The use of alternative photocatalytic materials to
    TiO2 nanoparticles, such as perovskite-like nanostructures, is not discarded.

    2. Fully characterization of the nanostructures. A chemical, structural,
    morphological and spectroscopic characterization will be preformed.

    3. Assembly of dye-sensitized solar cells with the previously characterized
    nanostructures and without nanoparticles for comparison.

    4. Testing of photovoltaic properties of cell devices under simulated sunlight.

El candidato ha de dar soporte rápido a los equipos de investigación mediante prototipados electrónicos de prototipos fiables y robustos a utilizar en pruebas piloto y/o ensayos clínicos y ha de realizar las documentaciones técnicas necesarias para la obtención de las certificaciones (documentación de diseño del prototipo, documentación del FW, análisis de riesgos, etc.).
    Los candidatos deben tener experiencia en desarrollo HW & FW de dispositivos electrónicos, con conocimientos preferentemente en el campo de los requisitos específicos de los dispositivos médicos. La experiencia previa en el sector industrial, y más específicamente en el sector de la tecnología médica, será altamente valorada.     What we are looking for:

    - At least 3-4 year experience participating in sample preparation for EM and research projects related to this field. (please attach specific publications or recommendations).

    PhD description:

    As an alternative to the currently existing liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries, all solid state concepts have arisen as an alternative for stationary applications due to their potential higher energy density, longer cycle life and safety properties. Several cell configurations will be evaluated with special emphasis in choosing cost competitive and scalable processing techniques for the electrode, electrolyte and cell fabrication. Improvement of individual cell components and full cell properties through processing parameters optimization will be performed. Moreover, the student will receive training in different electrochemical characterization techniques in order to assess the properties of the electrodes, electrolytes and full cells he/she will prepare.



    Requisites

    CIC energiGUNE is looking for a highly motivated candidate with a university degree on Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science or related areas to perform applied research within the framework of an industrial PhD.

    Main functions

    The safe passage of trains through tunnels and the integrity of the related infrastructure depend to a great extent on appropriate maintenance and having in place the measures that are needed to inspect various elements, including the rails. In order to detect and identify defects on the running surface of rails and the sub-surface, electromagnetic non-destructive (END) testing techniques have advantages over other inspection techniques.

    The position is part of a national research project being carried out in conjunction with several technology and industrial partners from the railway and infrastructure sectors. The sub-project that Ceit-IK4 is working on involves inspecting rails for cracks via magnetic non-destructive testing techniques.

    The candidate will be responsible for manufacturing a prototype for measuring, capturing and processing the data from the magnetic testing, working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary research team. The measuring system to be designed for the project will be embedded in an unmanned automatic inspection vehicle that has on-board data capturing and data processing systems.

    The candidate will acquire the following competencies: team work, programming, and electronic design.

    Main functions

    Dado que el agua es un recurso escaso, entre otras cuestiones debido al crecimiento de la población y a los efectos por el cambio climático, debe ser gestionada de una manera eficiente, cuyo objetivo principal es que el máximo volumen de agua que entra en la red llegue a sus puntos de consumo, minimizando las pérdidas en la mayor medida posible. 

    La tesis doctoral se centrará en el desarrollo de algoritmos novedosos de análisis de datos y machine learning para la predicción de consumo y detección de fugas, que faciliten la operación y la gestión de los sistemas de abastecimiento de agua.


    Requisites

    Graduado en Ing. Telecomunicación con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación / Licenciado en Ciencias Exactas / Graduado en Matemáticas con Master en Modelización e Investigación Matemática, Estadística y Computacional, o con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación.
