    IK4-CIDETEC está buscando un investigador senior para trabajar en proyectos de investigación aplicada en el ámbito de coloides y polímeros inteligentes para aplicación de “drug delivery” dentro de la unidad de Biomateriales. El investigador liderará un equipo en el desarrollo de nuevos productos en áreas como cosmética y farmacéutica, en los cuales debe tener un nivel de conocimiento alto de regulatoria en ambos campos. You will be conducting exciting research into the functioning, design and control of battery materials at the molecular scale. The work will focus on using first-principles and semi-empirical approaches to address complex ion dynamics as well as developing novel strategies to analyse and mine existing large-scale materials data repositories. You will receive training in advanced molecular modelling techniques, including density functional theory and molecular dynamics, with particular interest in how to efficiently integrate such techniques into automated high-throughput frameworks for effective materials discovery. The work will be done in close collaboration with several theoretical and experimental groups worldwide.     Theme:The research project will be focused on the advanced combined structural and thermodynamic characterization of battery materials by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ssNMR).

    Description:
    The rational development of new materials for advanced energy storage applications relies in the detailed description and understanding of the key structural and dynamic parameters that direct their electrochemical performance. Indeed, the redox reactions involved in batteries typically require the reversible intercalation/extraction of alkali ions (e.g. Li+, Na+, etc.) into/from the structure of electrode materials. Therefore, advances in material characterization techniques are crucial in the development of new technologies for energy storage applications.
    Structural methods based in diffraction techniques like XRD are basic for the macroscopic description of solid materials and reveal critical aspects of the long range atomic disposition. Solid state NMR on the other hand provides very valuable information of the local environment of magnetic active atoms and their mobility.
    The goal of the present research project is to explore the global description that result from the combination of both techniques and to develop new methods and experimental parameters that will help to explain and even predict the performance of the materials under investigation.
    The XRD and solid state NMR platforms at CIC energiGUNE are at the top at the international level and are equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated methods available to date. In situ/operando experiments are foreseen as well as the complementary use of synchrotron or neutron radiation.

    Main functions

    The research will focus on the analysis of the shadow effect produced by the human body on indoor positioning systems based on the strength of RF signals. The presence of the human body influences the propagation channel between the device to be located carried by the person and the beacon devices that are used as reference points in the positioning system. This influence will depend on the position and relative orientation between device to be located, person and beacons, as well as on the frequency and polarization of RF signals. The challenge to be solved in this thesis work is to design a method capable of compensating for the shadow effect produced by the human body in the estimation of its position with the positioning system based on the strength of the RF signals.

    The research proposed will focus on the design, develop, simulation and/or co-simulation of RFID tag anti-collision protocols with the main purpose of studying the diverse phenomena affecting the identification of tags and also, to reduce the edge between the existing designs on scientific literature and real RFID systems.
    RFID is a very powerful technology which requires optimization of its hardware and software. The tag collision problem is one of the most important problems in RFID tag identification. Arbitration methods are required to decrease collision responses and the amount of information transmitted between tags and readers.
    Considering the restrictions of the RFID technology, some techniques will be developed to optimize the identification of moving tags. The reader will have to manage arriving, staying and leaving tags from its antenna range, with the main objective of decreasing the identification time and the energy consumed in the process. These techniques will seek for the proper combination of simplicity and efficiency.

    The goal of proposed research is to define scalable and efficient communication and application protocols that can be understood by all the agents included in real scenario to ensure the safe coexistence of cellular users, vehicular users and the infrastructure, defining a multi-hop routing protocol.
    Since 3GPP Rel 12 LTE-A supports Device-to-Device (D2D) functionality. However, this technology was not meant to meet stringent V2X requirements in terms of latency, reliability and mobility. These limitations have motivated the research community to investigate cellular-based V2X communications.
    Based on these advantages, the applicability of D2D techniques for V2V communications has been analysed in different works. In particular, reuse gain stems from the fact that D2D and cellular links can share the same radio resources. However, the reuse gain comes at the expense of increased interference level what in turn must be neatly controlled by the network. Consequently, the motivation of this thesis proposal is to propose an underlay RRM algorithm capable of mitigating the interferences and ensuring the different QoS requirements of ITS applications can be satisfied, allowing at the same time multi-hop routing protocols among cellular and vehicular users.

    The present thesis proposal aims to study the different distributed architectures for the implementation of cyber-physical systems (CPS) that combine a set of physical and computational components distributed in the same system to develop an architecture that conforms to the demanding requirements of emerging applications (eg medical, manufacturing or vehicular electronics) taking advantage of these latest generation hybrid SoCs.

    The objective will be to obtain deep learning architectures capable of processing the large amount of data generated by the current smart cities and of processing them all in order to find patterns. Its application will be focused on traffic data processing in cities and their access routes, in a crude way, for automatic generation of alerts on the future state of traffic.
    This will be achieved by using Big Data technologies for the integration and management of large volumes of data from the traffic sensor of the city, as well as contextual information (events, calendars, ...). Secondly, solutions based on Deep Learning will be designed and implemented to train with such data in order to find patterns that allow the detection of the future occurrence of incidents or particular states of the city.

    Main functions

    Nuclear fusion is considered the energy of the future due to its almost unlimited resources, its inherent safety and the absence of greenhouse gases. One of the most important technological challenges for the implementation of this form of energy is the development of materials able to withstand the extreme conditions to which they will be exposed.
    The objective of this project is the development of oxidation resistant, self-passivating tungsten alloys with suitable thermal and mechanical properties for their application in future fusion reactors.
    The activity lies within the framework of a European project and will be performed in close collaboration with other European research centers. The work to be done by Ceit’s team is the manufacturing by powder metallurgy of tungsten alloys of different composition and their characterization. The material developed and optimized at Ceit will be sent to the collaboration institutions for subsequent test relevant for the application. The work envisages the optimization of the material developed so far, with special emphasis on its oxidation and thermo-shock resistance. The candidate will be familiarized with different powder metallurgical manufacturing techniques as well as with the most advanced materials characterization techniques.
    The candidate will perform a PhD thesis in the frame of this Project.

    Misión del puesto: Definir el proceso más adecuado de puesta en marcha y efectuar la programación, pruebas y puesta en marcha interior(Vitoria) y exterior (casa del cliente), hasta la aceptación por parte del cliente, así como realizar actividades relativas al servicio post-venta de cualquier instalación de acuerdo a las especificaciones del proyecto.

    Responsabilidades: Analizar las funcionalidades de cada instalación para definir el proceso más adecuado de programación y puesta en marcha, interpretando la documentación técnica de la instalación y las especificaciones de la misma y planificando los recursos y actividades de las distintas especialidades, de acuerdo a las especificaciones de calidad, requerimientos, plazo y coste del proyecto.

    Realizar y/o supervisar todas las actividades relativas a la programación de las instalaciones (instalación de software, programación de plc, paneles de operador, sistemas de control de ejes, CNC, Scada, redes de comunicaciones,...), tanto con recursos internos como subcontratados, elaborando la documentación técnica adecuada para cada cliente e incorporando las nuevas tecnologías que sean necesarias.

    Responsabilizarse de las todas actividades propias de puesta en marcha de las instalaciones, desde la supervisión de las operaciones de desembalaje y montaje de las distintas especialidades, hasta la aceptación por parte del cliente, tanto interior como exterior, canalizando el resto de asuntos pendientes de la manera adecuada.

    Realizar las pruebas y las verificaciones de las distintas especialidades que componen la instalación en el proceso de programación y puesta en marcha tanto interior como exterior.

    Realizar reparaciones, modificaciones y retrofits supervisando los materiales necesarios y los trabajos relativos a cualquier especialidad, así como atender las incidencias técnicas que les surjan a los clientes.

    This position is aimed at recent graduates who are interested in doing a doctoral thesis in the area of Materials Science and in the area of powder metallurgy in particular.

    The materials under study in this project are the NdFeB alloy powders that go into the manufacture permanent bonded magnets. These magnets are made by mixing magnetic particles with various bonding polymers and then moulding the mixture using injection, extrusion, compression or other methods. The magnets are used in various sectors, such as the automobile industry (e.g. in electric motor and sensors), in the power and consumer electronics sectors (e.g. speakers, microphones, hard drive readers, motors for CD and DVD players, etc.).

    Currently, the NdFeB powders used for bonded magnets are produced via melt spinning or HDDR (hydrogenation disproportionation desorption recombination) processing. The present research project intends to develop an alternative route based on gas atomization, a process that has two main advantages. One is that the particles are spherical, allowing a greater volumetric fraction of magnetic powder in the final magnet. The other is that its high productivity means that it is a more economic process and the resulting material is less expensive.

    During the course of the project, the various steps of the powder manufacturing process (determining the alloy composition, gas atomization and post-atomization heat treatments) will be optimized. This will ensure that the new powders have the composition, granulometry, morphology and microstructure needed to give bonded magnets properties that are comparable with or superior to the ones available in commercial products. The new powders will be subjected to a detailed characterization process, including the measurement of their physical (density), chemical (ICP-OES spectroscopy), microstructural (FEG-SEM, XRD) and magnetic (remanence, coercivity and energy products) properties.

    Working within the framework of a European project and in collaboration with project partners, these powders will be used to manufacture bonded magnets whose magnetic properties will be compared with the materials that already exist on the market.

    Improving the properties of NdFeB bonded magnets could result in their replacing sintered magnets in various applications. This would lead to a significant reduction in the consumption of a number of raw materials that are classified as critical by the European Union (primarily rare earth elements, cobalt and gallium).

    The safe passage of trains through tunnels and the integrity of the related infrastructure depend to a great extent on appropriate maintenance and having in place the measures that are needed to inspect various elements, including the rails. In order to detect and identify defects on the running surface of rails and the sub-surface, electromagnetic non-destructive (END) testing techniques have advantages over other inspection techniques.

    The position is part of a national research project being carried out in conjunction with several technology and industrial partners from the railway and infrastructure sectors. The sub-project that Ceit-IK4 is working on involves inspecting rails for cracks via magnetic non-destructive testing techniques.

    The candidate will be responsible for manufacturing a prototype for measuring, capturing and processing the data from the magnetic testing, working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary research team. The measuring system to be designed for the project will be embedded in an unmanned automatic inspection vehicle that has on-board data capturing and data processing systems.

    La estimación de propiedades de los materiales que forman una pieza basadas en el efecto que producen en las alteraciones de señales aplicadas a dicha pieza están en la base de muchas técnicas empleadas en test-no-destructivo. El objeto de la tesis es investigar los beneficios que se pueden obtener en el análisis y capacidad de detección de parámetros de la pieza bajo estudio aplicando técnicas avanzadas de procesado de señal directamente sobre la señal y desarrollar algoritmo ad-hoc para las técnicas que se están desarrollando en CEIT.

    Main functions

    El objetivo de la tesis será desarrollar técnicas no destructivas de caracterización de materiales con ondas de microondas. Dentro de un grupo de trabajo multidisciplinar y con diversos perfiles, la labor del doctorando será investigar la iteración de diferentes materiales con las ondas de microondas, proponer sistemas de monitorización novedosos, diseñar e implementar estos sistemas a nivel de prototipo y testearlos. El objetivo final de grupo será desarrollar estos prototipos hasta una fase de producto dando respuesta a necesidades concretas de la industria.

    La tesis pretende desarrollar y validar una nueva librería de modelos matemáticos compatibles entre sí que permitan describir dinámicamente las principales transformaciones físicas, químicas y biológicas que tienen lugar en los diferentes procesos y reactores de las líneas de agua de las instalaciones industriales (depósitos, reactores bioquímicos, reactores químicos, sistemas de filtración, intercambiadores, calderas, decantadores, reactores de oxidación, etc.).



    Requisites

    Se piensa en estudiantes con una sólida formación en matemáticas y con conocimientos de química, física y termodinámica de los procesos industriales.

    Dado que el agua es un recurso escaso, entre otras cuestiones debido al crecimiento de la población y a los efectos por el cambio climático, debe ser gestionada de una manera eficiente, cuyo objetivo principal es que el máximo volumen de agua que entra en la red llegue a sus puntos de consumo, minimizando las pérdidas en la mayor medida posible. 

    La tesis doctoral se centrará en el desarrollo de algoritmos novedosos de análisis de datos y machine learning para la predicción de consumo y detección de fugas, que faciliten la operación y la gestión de los sistemas de abastecimiento de agua.


    Requisites

    Graduado en Ing. Telecomunicación con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación / Licenciado en Ciencias Exactas / Graduado en Matemáticas con Master en Modelización e Investigación Matemática, Estadística y Computacional, o con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación.
