    BCAM is a world-class research center on Applied Mathematics with a focus on interdisciplinary research in the frontiers of mathematics, attraction and training of talented scientists, development of new numerical and simulation methods, interaction with industry, and promotion of scientiRc and technological advances worldwide. Located in the Basque Country, it beneRts from a long industrial tradition, and it is linked with the French Atlantic corridor, a region of excellence in Applied Mathematics. This context contributes to the task of building an excellence research center. BCAM counts with around 60 researchers from over 20 different countries with experience in some of the most prestigious research centers on their area, organized in 5 research areas and an administrative support team composed by 7 people. BCAM is a young research center that is facing its consolidation phase. In this sense, the scientiRc strategy of the center is based on three ScientiRc Platforms that have been set up in order to establish an interdisciplinary system capable of facing the challenges of Mathematical Science in a broad manner by bringing together Mathematics, Engineering and Sciences: * Core in Applied Mathematics: PDE, Numerical Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Algebraic Geometry, Probability and Statistics. * Computational Mathematics: Modeling andcomputer simulations using numerical, stochastic and Monte Carlo methods. * Applications of Mathematics to Industry, Social Sciences and Health Sciences.     This position is one of the 9 positions available within the ENABLE project, financed by the EU under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions in the H2020-MSCA-ITN Program. The European Training Network actively involves academics and industrial partners in training a new generation of young researchers for the future of manufacturing. By developing new solutions for forecasting and mastering processes relevant for all factories using metallic alloys, ENABLE proposes a complete rethink of the usual process simulation methods.     Main functions

    The group has a strong background in the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques to middleware for embedded and mobile system in order to foster context-aware reactivity. In addition, the group is currently focusing its research on the area of Smart Cities by leveraging its expertise on Ubiquitous Computing, Linked Open Data management and recommendation and social data mining (Big Data Analytics) to extract structured data from social networks and thus enable urban apps assisting the daily activities of citizens or visitors.

    MORElab has recently obtained recognition as recognized research group within the Basque university system. As result of this grant, there is an opening to complete our research skills in heterogeneous data management and analytics. Concretely, we are looking for a PostDoc helping us in the execution of research projects and preparation of proposals of new European projects in the area of ICT oriented towards the resolution of socioeconomic issues. The group is currently embarked in several European H2020 projects which involve knowledge and expertise in the following sub-fields.

    Job Summary

    The research will focus on the design, development, and implementation of a wireless passive computational device. This device will be powered by an ambient radio signal and will be able to power a microcontroller and a sensor to read its value and transmit it to a receiver.

    Job Description

    The main objective of this thesis will be to develop a wireless passive computational device, powered by an ambient radio signal that solves the existing problem of the optimization of the hardware and the available resources to provide a fully functional passive device. The student will consider the problems related to the reception, storage and management of the radio signal energy, and the microcontroller and sensor power consumption.
    Currently there are several innovative prototypes of this type of devices or tags that use ambient radio signals to be self-powered and to provide the information collected by a sensor or an actuator. These devices represent a hot research topic in a very challenging and innovative research area that may help to solve some of the already existing problems in the field of transport and mobility of goods and people.
    Knowledge on electronics, circuit analysis and PCB design, C++, Python, assembler, and radio frequency transmission is desired for this vacancy.



    Requisites

    Candidates should have a first class or good 2.1 honours degree in Electronics, Telecommunications or Computer Engineering (other equivalent disciplines will be also considered).
    An appropriate degree at Masters Level will be mandatory in order to access to the PhD program (applicants finishing a Master’s degree along this academic year will also be considered).

    Job Summary

    The research will focus on the design, development, simulation, and implementation of an RFID protocol with the main purpose of streaming data from passive tags including different types of sensors. The student will research on the diverse phenomena affecting the identification and reading of tags such as intermittent power, the capture effect, or the detection errors in RFID protocols for sensor data using computational tags.

    Job Description

    The main objective of this thesis will be to develop a new protocol for streaming data from passive sensors, and to adapt the protocol to different types of computational tags in order to provide a fluent connexion with each device. Considering the restrictions of RFID technology, some techniques will have to be developed to optimize the communication with moving tags. The reader will have to manage arriving, staying and leaving tags from its antenna range and the power sent to the tags. These tags, on the other hand, will have to optimize the energy cycles generated by the reader to power up their sensors and circuitry. These techniques will seek for the proper combination of simplicity and efficiency.

    Main functions

    CIDETEC is looking for a researcher to perform research in solid state batteries line within the Materials for Energy Unit.
    We are looking for a high qualified researcher with extended experience in the energy storage field who is capable to manage and develop research projects in the area of solid state batteries. A successful candidate must demonstrate proven track records of high level investigations and capabilities in European and international environment.
    The researcher will be incorporated into Materials for Energy Unit working within the framework of research and/or industrial projects. He/She should be able to optimize available resources in order to simultaneously carry out several research lines with maximal output.

    He/She will be responsible for the development of solid state batteries with high energy density.     In this frame, we are now inviting applications for one Post-doctoral position in the field of physical modelling and numerical analysis of TES systems. The main activities to be developed by the selected candidate will consist on providing in depth understanding of heat and mass transfer and transport phenomena, as well as of phase transitions and reactional phenomena, at different scales and studying overall performances of the storage systems based on computational fluid dynamic approaches. The ultimate goal of the performed research will be the optimization and the final viability demonstration of different heat storage alternatives through computational calculations. Between the different thermal energy storage concepts considered special attention will be paid to packed-bed systems using phase change materials (PCM) as storage medium and boiling/condensing processes as a solution for heat transfer intensification between the storage material and the heat transfer fluid. The performance analysis of these storage systems will be analysed by their implementation on realistic environments related to heat demanding/consuming processes in the industry. The detailed analysis of the effect of using different heat transfer fluids, different PCMs - including different encapsulation solutions and PCMs packing within the storage system - as well as different working conditions (mass flow, inlet pressure and inlet temperature) on the final performances will represent the core activities of the research. The final model validation in real storage pilot plants is also considered.

    Preference will be given to candidates with extensive hands-on experience in fluid dynamics and heat transfer using self-developed or commercial codes. A previous experience on numerical analysis of boiling/condensing processes within porous media would be highly appreciate.



    Main functions

    • Modelling and numerical implementation of heat and mass transfer within packed-bed systems with PCMs as storage material and multi-phase fluid flow, including boiling/condensing phenomena at the solid-liquid interfaces
    • Parametric analysis, optimization and final viability demonstration of the modelled packed-bed thermal energy storage solutions through computational fluid dynamic codes, using either commercial standard CFD codes or self-developments
    • Contribution to the design of TES system prototypes based on the studied concept, either at a lab-scale or at a relevant scale with respect to applications
    • Empirical validation of the developed numerical codes
    • Participation to benchmarking activities
    • Collaboration in project proposal writing to obtain funding from institutions and industrial sources.
    • Supervise graduate/master students.

Special attention will also be paid to the study of ageing/degradation processes of these materials, as well as to the analysis of their compatibility with usually used construction materials in TES systems. Between the different PCMs considered special attention will be paid to solid-solid PCMs, shape-stabilized PCMs and encapsulated PCMs for TES applications at low-to-medium temperature. Although the activity of the selected candidate will be focused on research at the material scale, he/she will also be involved in demonstration and piloting activities as well as on scaling up of developed advanced PCMs.
    Preference will be given to candidates with extensive hands-on experience in organic chemistry and solid-liquid or solid-solid phase transitions. A previous experience on phase change materials for TES would be much appreciated.

    This PhD scholarship shall focus on the Vision/Perception aspect of robot guidance in assembly operations. Technically, it involves developing 3D vision algorithms, dense reconstruction, visual slam, matching pointcloud alignment semantic segmentation, learning, Active Vision, etc., and combines them in a Modelling and Understanding Pipeline that allows the robot to understand its environment to make decisions in real time. Detailed description of scholarship: Automating assembly operations is still a very important need for companies. But the context has changed and it is no longer a case of tens of thousands of units being produced where a robot can carry out the operation blindfolded. The current context demands small batch production that requires the robot to have a strong level of autonomy: it has to see, decide its operations and autonomously execute them to produce the components. This PhD scholarship focuses on the Perception aspect to guide the robot: it has to have the capacity to see its surroundings, modelise them, and precisely recognise and locate objects and parts. This capacity allows the robot to calculate precise motion paths without collisions, and learn new operations via ‘teaching by demonstration’ techniques, such as learning the parts and operations. 3D vision algorithms, dense reconstruction, visual slam, matching pointcloud alignment semantic segmentation, learning, Active Vision, etc. The scholarship should provide solutions to the problems identified in many companies and will have the highest level robot equipment and vision systems in the world.

Detailed description of scholarship: At the TECNALIA TEA (Tecnalia Electric Aircraft) group our mission is to promote the well-being of society through more ecological and secure air transport. Within the huge trend of aeronautical electrification, at TEA we want to position ourselves as the reference in developing technology that allows creating sustainable, green, and secure air transport. This is why we are putting together a multi-disciplinary group in order to design the air transport of the future. The PhD student shall be part of this group, actively interacting with the TEA researchers in a multicultural, dynamic, and enriching environment. There is currently a boom in the development of different innovative aircraft architectures based on electric propulsion (transport of goods, people, services), that along with a change in Spanish legislation towards a greater ease to fly and validate prototypes, shows an unbeatable context to develop technologies that boost the development of the sustainable and secure air transport ecosystem of the future. Within this scholarship, scientific-technological development will focus on advanced control algorithms that allow to establish the foundations in one of the essential development topics (aircraft dynamics, cooperative control or fleet control, and secure communications), so that at TEA we can progress in the development of solutions that provide a greater added value than currently used solutions. This scholarship will consist of a scientific part and an experimental part, given that the implemented developments will be validated by experimenting at the unique TEA ‘Flying Robots Lab’, where advanced controls can securely be tested with scale aircrafts.

    Urban environments are becoming more and more complex for drivers due to several factors as consecutive crossroads or lanes changes. The complexity of these scenarios demands specific infrastructures–i.e. roundabouts, for improving traffic flow compared with traditional intersections. A roundabout removes timeouts associated with traffic lights at crossroads and, for that reason, it is a challenging scenario for human drivers and automated vehicles. This work will be focused on the coordinated control for automated in roundabouts for smart cities. Main contributions are focused on real time trajectories generation and high level decision‐making systems for cooperative manoeuvre with Automated Vehicles. The information from the different on‐board sensors and communications to achieve a realtime trajectory generation will be considered, which should be smooth and with a continuous curvature in the path. Description of the scholarship: Roundabouts are relatively recent on urban environments, making difficult for some drivers–i.e. elderly people–to know how to deal with them. So far, fully automated capabilities at roundabout have been only tackled in a few single vehicles demonstrations worldwide. All these demonstrations show several capabilities for automated vehicles in complex scenarios. However, most of them consider prerecorded paths–i.e. previously hand‐driven data, and are based on steering wheel angle error tracking algorithms. Roundabouts were considered on these routes but they were modelled as standard intersections, without dedicated analysis in this scenario. A coordinated control in roundabouts, considering other automated, semi‐automated and not‐automated vehicles, remains an open challenge in nowadays. This PhD Thesis proposes a path planning generation and decision‐making methods for automated vehicle driving at roundabouts. These methods will attend a real‐time trajectory generation, in a first step for single vehicles, and then for more complex scenarios with others agents. The trajectory through a roundabout is divided the driving process in three stages: entrance manoeuvre, driving within the roundabout and exit manoeuvre. The proposed thesis will be firstly tested on simulations, assuming different scenarios (lanes and exits). Then, a prototype platform–Electric Twizy– will be used for the system validation on real urban environments. This work will be developed in the framework of Tecnalia, in the Automation area. The team has large experience in the development of perception, control and communication techniques for ITS systems in urban environments. Intelligent control techniques, such as: Fuzzy logic and neuro‐fuzzy system can be used to translate the human knowledge into the driving process. Different strategies will be used for the decision making of automated vehicles in urban roundabouts. For the trajectory generation, different mathematical models and parametric equations and elastic bands will be tested. The Bezier curves are an example of simple parametric equations, which have a computational advantage and its easy implementation in the control algorithm saves resources that can be reallocated to other computation tasks. In brief, this PhD work proposal is oriented to work in the development and execution of complex manoeuvres in urban environments, particularly roundabouts. The specific objectives are: ‐ To redefine the control architecture of the vehicle in Tecnalia for real time path planning. ‐ To test single vehicles manoeuvres in urban roundabouts. ‐ To follow a pre‐defined path, defined as a reference trajectory, based on stable control techniques. ‐ To perform specific trajectories in function of specific geometry configurations. As example: roundabouts, intersections and so on. ‐ Dynamic planning trajectory implementations – reactive planning – in order to perform unexpected avoidance maneuverers. ‐ To integrate on‐board sensor and communication information in order to consider other vehicle in the different stages of the automated driving in roundabouts. ‐ To design a decision making based on human natural driving for automated vehicles in roundabouts, based on: + Information from other drivers. + Pedestrian on the crosswalk. + Merging on the roundabout (stop, give way, …). + Exits the roundabout. + Lane change, if necessary, in each stage of the roundabout. This thesis will be tested on TECNALIA demonstrator vehicles.

    It involves examining the research areas in order to obtain advanced steel by addressing design of new compositions, its manufacture process and thermo-mechanical treatments. The objective is to obtain steel with improved properties in the area of lightening automotive components. Road traffic makes up approximately one fifth of the total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the EU. This is why the EU has established a global legal framework to reduce CO2 emissions of new light vehicles as part of the efforts to guarantee that the objectives to reduce green house gas emissions are met. In the case of cars, manufacturers are obligated to guarantee that new vehicles do not emit more than an average of 95 g by 2020, without compromising the security of passengers at any time. The figure was 160 g in 20017 and 135.7 g in 2011. To achieve this objective, the automotive industry needs to implement long-term investments and develop innovative technologies. The main strategy being followed by most automotive manufacturers consists of decreasing vehicle weight. This may be carried out via different strategies: (i) re- designing parts to reduce their materials, (ii) reducing the thickness of components by using higher durability materials and (iii) reducing the density of the used material. This scholarship addresses the second strategy via the development of new high resistance steel to reduce the thickness of the components and the total weight of the car (a 100 kg decrease in vehicle weight means ~ 8.5 g less CO2 emissions per km).

    Brief description of scholarship: This PhD scholarship focuses on additive manufacturing of high value-added metal components. This thesis involves working on the development of high-build additive technology, specifically WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) technology for different metal alloys relevant to the aeronautical sector. Technically, it will focus on the development and modelling of different metallic alloys via low thermal impact welding equipment, analysis of manufacturing strategies and correlation of mechanical properties with the manufacturing process. Detailed description of scholarship: Additive manufacturing is a new paradigm in the manufacturing world that affects the way design and manufacturing are carried out. Additive manufacturing has many benefits: product personalisation, decentralisation and stock reduction, among others worth mentioning. This PhD scholarship is intended for the development and research of WAAM technologies, which consist in using arc welding technologies to manufacture 3D metallic components via deposition of metallic wire. The researcher of this thesis will work in an industrial setting based on anthropomorphic robot (6 or 8 axes) a GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) technology welding source to develop the start-up, modelling and monitoring of an additive manufacturing process in different metallic alloys. The scholarship shall be carried out in collaboration with industrial companies that are interested in these highly productive processes with a high impact in different sectors.

    Brief description of scholarship: This scholarship intents to develop new PUR system formulations for RTM processes, enabling manufacturing structural composites for the automotive sector with faster production rates and improved properties (impact resistance, durability). Work will be undertaken in the field of synthesis of new resin formulations, as well as design and development of manufacturing processes of structural components with those formulations. The matters covers will include: from analysis, synthesis and characterisation of resins, to simulation and optimisation of manufacturing processes. Detailed description of scholarship: Thanks to their low density and excellent strength to weight-ratio, composites are the materials with the highest weight reduction potential to achieve lighter structures and therefore reduce CO2 emissions of cars. However, the use of these materials for light-weight solutions on the automotive market is still budding due to the production cost of these components and reduced production capacity/long processing times of the current manufacturing technology. As a result, automotive manufacturers, alongside resin producers, are working to develop more reactive materials and processes which enable increasing production rates while reducing processing times to just a few minutes, such as: High Pressure-RTM (HP RTM) and High Pressure Compression-RTM (HP CRTM). Regarding RTM resins in particular, ultra-fast curing (2-5 min) and low viscosity formulations are required to maximise the optimisation of curing and injection cycles. Epoxy resins which are currently used compete with thermoplastic composites and polyurethanes in this race. Compared to other alternatives, Polyurethane (PUR) resin based technology offers the advantage of high tenacity and fatigue strength properties, which make them particularly attractive for components subject to impact or to cyclic loads such as suspension components. Nevertheless, the main use of thermosetting PURs was traditionally focused on low performance applications and projection processes, R-RIM, S-RIM or casting. As a result, their application to structural components has not been immediate. This scholarship intends to develop new PUR formulations specific for RTM processes, facilitating the manufacture of high-performance structural components with high production rates at low costs. For this, the following work will be carried out: ‐Definition of technical requirements; analysis of commercial systems; and synthesis of new PUR formulations; ‐Characterisation and modelling of systems developed for manufacturing process simulation purposes; and ‐Design and fine-tuning the manufacturing process of structural components with the new formulations developed.

    Brief description of scholarship: For several years, the automotive sector companies face the need to develop lighter vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, without generating an impact on safety. Recently, Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) have been launched to the market to address those needs. These steels have excellent mechanical properties and a good strength/ductility balance mainly due to their complex microstructures: a combination of multi phases such as ferrite, martensite, bainite and retained austenite. However, there are also disadvantages. AHSS steels present problems in the cold sheet metal forming process. This is due to premature tool breakage, elastic recovery deviation known as springback and the formation of unexpected fractures. This prevents AHSS extensive use in the automotive sector. The project including this PhD scholarship intends to solve these problems which are currently so relevant for the automotive sector companies. Detailed description of scholarship: As we know, the future of the automotive industry is based on increasing vehicle sustainability, which in turn demands reducing gas emissions and fuel consumption. Today, the automotive sector accounts for 15% of CO2 emissions and has to comply with European standards such as Euro 5 and Euro 6. These standards set an emission limit below 100 g CO2/km (75 g CO2/km in 2025). In addition to the above, the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) constitutes another step towards providing consumption and emission standards which are more realistic and according to actual vehicle use by drivers and not based on laboratory measurements as the current New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Additionally, in 2019 a new even more restrictive standard, the Real Driving Emissions (RDE), is expected to come into force in 2019. The new RDE will reflect consumptions more accurately and in real-life conditions. Moreover, it will force the automotive sector and its value chain to develop solutions to avoid losing competitiveness or even being forced out of the market. As a result of this, one of the main strategic lines implemented by car manufacturers consists of reducing the weight of components; and this requires new lighter materials. Driven by these needs from the transport sector, steel manufacturers have developed new high mechanical strength grades which achieve reduced thickness in carbody parts. Over recent years, this vehicle weight loss has experienced a major breakthrough thanks to the development of new mainly multiphase Advanced High-Strength Steels known as AHSS. Nowadays, these steels, used in chassis and carbody structural components, are characterised by a combination of high mechanical strength values (from 600 to 1500 MPa). However, AHSS steels are less formable than the conventional grades which have been traditionally used in the car industry. This, combined with the formation of unexpected fractures and the evolution of automotive sector geometries which demands highly complex forming operations, are the current challenges faced by the stamping and deep drawing sector, which this project aims to solve. From the mechanical and fracture prediction point of view, models may be divided into two scales: i) microscopic scale (micro or micro-scale); and ii) macroscopic scale (macro or macro-scale). Micro-scale or micro mechanics (in micrometres) analyses phenomena from the viewpoint of dislocations, grains, interactions between phases, etc. This scale includes material unevenness and plays a major role in understanding failure and describing damage evolution in materials. Understanding how different the micro components of a material behave at a micro scale, enables us to comprehend and predict (although with complexity) the material behaviour at a macro scale. The current computational techniques facilitate addressing these issues at different scales, using what is known an as multiscale models. Furthermore, the mechanics of continuous media at a macro scale (in the millimetre to meter order), considers the material is homogeneous and uses phenomenological models based on tension and deformation statuses to predict material limits. From an engineering viewpoint, macro scale has always been more practical, due to its reduced complexity and shorter computation times, and the different issues during the forming process have usually been addressed from this perspective. Nevertheless, the models available today in FEM software products on the market are not capable of reproducing AHSS failure with accuracy, as they are increasingly complex and require more sophisticated models The aim of this PhD scholarship is to develop a multiscale model (see Figure 1) capable of predicting failure in AHSS steels and providing computational efficiency to further industrial applications.

    Brief description of scholarship: The aim of this scholarship is to tackle the paradigm of Industry 4.0 from the data science viewpoint, effectively applying the latest technological advances in data analysis to the digital industry. Different industrial asset manufacturing and operating sectors that generate vast quantities of processing and operating data will be analysed in order to optimise production (rationalising the use of resources, reducing defects and nonconformities, increasing availability), extract useful knowledge of involved processes and assets and support business decision making. The technology to be investigated and applied shall focus on Machine Learning and Big Data analytics paradigms and on designing analysis, diagnosis and impact methodology. Scholarship description: Industrial processes, whether extractive, manufacturing or transformation, are complex and imply a large number of subprocesses and parameters that should be monitored in order to control the production process. Advanced monitoring that contributes to increasing the level of understanding and improvement of these processes thanks to the methodology to be developed, which involves acquisition, storage, analysis and inspection tasks to provide advanced solutions to complex problems from the data science viewpoint. The amount of registered data is ever increasing and they are stored in increasingly larger databases, of which information is not being used adequately. Current information analysis and management technologies allow to respond to the following needs: IoT, Big Data, Machine Learning, etc. The analysis, diagnosis, and impact (ADI) model to be developed is the technological solution that aims to respond to the new needs and opportunities that the digital industry poses, via smart analysis of the monitored data from involved processes and assets. The challenge lies in knowing what to do with the available information in order to obtain a useful competitive advantage. The methodology to be designed will allow to infer and shape the implicit knowledge in the data, obtaining descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive models based on data that are able to solve complex problems to be addressed in the scholarship. Of the techniques to research and develop in the ADI context, special emphasis will be placed on hybrid or semi-physical multivariable models for implementing soft or virtual sensors and on deep learning algorithms to shape spatial-temporal events in time series, as well as on the concept drift paradigm to design optimal upgrade strategies and use the generated models. The PhD student will collaborate with other members of the Business Department and other areas of the Division to work on the following areas of applied research: 1. Defining and designing ADI analysis methodology from the data science viewpoint and driven by real problems posed by the digital industry. 2. Implementing the necessary algorithms to automate the learning process of models that allow to solve complex industrial problems via analysis of the available information, with special emphasis on hybrid or semi-physical multivariable models and deep learning algorithms to shape spatial-temporal events in time series. 3. Designing optimal solutions and strategies to implement soft or virtual sensors and to upgrade and use the models generated from the concept drift paradigm. 4. Deploying the developed methodology and algorithms in industrial processes and assets that involve mass analysis of monitored data, using Big Data strategies to do so. 5. Validating results in real application settings via online analysis of monitored data, quantifying the improvement level of the process regarding the proposed objectives, such as production optimisation and energy consumption, minimising defective products and predicting events of interest in involved processes and assets.

    Brief description of scholarship: The purpose of the scholarship is to develop mathematical models that can predict the behaviour and effect of nanometric ceramic particles in an aluminium matrix. The results will be compared with the analysis of the micro-structure of specimens obtained by casting and the correlation between the properties and the micro-structure of the material will be sought. The final purpose is to develop a tool based on simulation models that helps in the selection and optimisation of the addition of particles in cast aluminium to make the most of the possibilities of nano- reinforcements and reduce the number of tests in the pilot plant. Detailed description of scholarship: The work falls under the line of development of materials made up of a nano-reinforced aluminium matrix from the Tecnalia casting platform in which a series of projects are in progress. The nanometric scale of the reinforcements theoretically provides significant increases in the mechanical properties of the aluminium alloys. However, the hardening mechanisms and the relationship between the micro-structure and the final properties and features of this family of materials are not yet clear. The laboratory work is hindered by the current technical barriers to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of the nanoparticles and the difficulty of their observation by conventional techniques of micro-structural characterisation. Therefore, other tools, such as modelling, are required. The proposed work seeks to develop models that predict the behaviour of the nanoparticles under different conditions of the process (under the effect of ultrasonic waves, agitation by induction, mechanical agitation, temperature of the cast aluminium, morphology and chemical nature of the nanoparticles, etc.) and the mechanical properties of the nano-reinforced material are predicted.

    The aim of the offered research assistantship is to support Dr. Olazabal in the development of a world-wide urban adaptation policy database and the development and testing of risk-based indicators. A summary of the project to be led by Dr. Olazabal can be found here. The tasks will include the development of systematic reviews (policy documents and scientific literature); urban data collection, preparation and analysis; preparation of interview materials and reports, together with other tasks related to overall project support. The RA will be based at BC3 headquarters in Leioa (Bizkaia, Spain). The position will potentially require travelling to conferences and field work in another country (few weeks during spring-summer 2019). Specific details still to be determined. Traveling expenses will be covered by the project.



    Requisites

    Applicants must hold a master’s degree or have an equivalent professional experience. Interest and/or experience in urban planning and management, climate change policy and particularly in adaptation would be a highly desirable asset. Candidates must be fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of other languages (Hindi, Chinese, Portuguese…) is desirable. In addition, strong organizational and analytical skills and experience working in collaborative environments are essential.

    Objective: The ESR3 will have to provide a detailed experimental behaviour law and perform microstructural investigations in order to clearly establish interdependences between microstructure and strain. Tecnalia is looking for 1 PhD student. The aim of the ESR3 is to study the thermomechanical behaviour of three selected Titanium, Aluminium and Nickel based alloys. The ESR3 will have to provide a detailed experimental behaviour law and perform microstructural investigations in order to clearly establish interdependences between microstructure and strain. The main technological and scientific steps to overcome concern:   1. the definition of thermomechanical tests able to reproduce the same solicitations than during machining (high deformation rate and medium range deformation), FSW (medium deformation rate, high deformation) and Additive Manufacturing ( high temperature), 2. the identification the kinetic changes parameters 3. the ability to relate these parameters to the microstructures and dynamic behaviours observed. Design a new test bench A new experimental dynamic torsion test device based on the principle of a fly wheel will be developed to reproduce locally the stress levels and strain rates encountered in processes such as machining or FSW. In a first step, this device must allow, by means of a torsional stress, to achieve very high deformations (of the order of ε = 2) at medium strain rate (of the order of 200 s-1). An evolution will then be made to perform temperature tests (up to 0.7 times the melting temperature for the three alloys studied). The novelty of this equipment lies in the dynamic tests in torsion and traction that can be carried out under extreme strain rates by controlling the speed of loading. Interrupted tests are also expected to be performed (i.e. where the test can be stopped at an imposed strain level), to allow the genesis of the microstructural transformation to be studied during loading. Strain and temperature in the sample will be measured during the tests. Study the thermomechanical behaviour Once the test bench has been developed, the ESR3 will have to set an accurate experimental behaviour law. For this purpose, she/he will rely on the design of experiment (DOE), in order to optimize and organize her/his tests campaign. This phenomenological constitutive law will generate baseline data to microstructural models. Establish interdependences between microstructure and strain The ESR3 will focus on the formation of adiabatic shear bands (occurring during dynamic processes like machining) and on dynamic recrystallization (DRX) that occurs especially in the FSW during hot and large deformation. The main effect of the DRX is the creation of an equiaxed, refined and homogenous microstructure. Several microstructural investigations will be performed in order to clearly identify the mechanisms governing the evolution for plastic response covering a wide range of temperature strain and strain rates. ESR3 will have to develop a DRX model and study the geneses of adiabatic shear bands for the 3 selected materials.Study the thermomechanical behavior. This position is one of the 9 positions available within the ENABLE project, financed by the EU under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions in the H2020-MSCA-ITN Program. The European Training Network actively involves academics and industrial partners in training a new generation of young researchers for the future of manufacturing. By developing new solutions for forecasting and mastering processes relevant for all factories using metallic alloys, ENABLE proposes a complete rethink of the usual process simulation methods. Innovative multiscale (from microscopic to macroscopic scales), and multi-physics (strong thermomechanical and microstructural couplings) are addressed multi-level advanced (TRL 1 to 8) simulation. We will perform these simulation on several widely-used processes: Machining, Friction Stir Welding and Additive Manufacturing, to address the needs of our wide range of industrial partners. Titanium, Nickel based and Aluminium alloys, the most popular metals in industry, have been chosen for this scientific investigation. ENABLE will develop new tools that are better suited to production addressing such issues as reduced premature wear, increased service life, improved tools, etc. which will reduce production time and thereby production costs. A group of 9 Early Stage Researchers will be trained within world leading research teams. They will be introduced to novel approaches and applications while exploiting advances in fundamental research. To “enable” this vision, each trainee will join a team of closely integrated world-class experts in mechanical science, materials science and computer science/numerical methods. Additional cross-disciplinary training (intellectual property, patenting, entrepreneurship, communication, open science, gender balance awareness, etc.) and a strong involvement on the part of the 12 Industries, SMEs, and research centres will provide the students with transferable skills and complementary competencies which will improve their research abilities and enhance their future employability.     Main functions

    Thermal energy storage (TES) systems are valuable components in most energy systems and could be an important tool in achieving a low-carbon future. These technologies allow for the decoupling of energy supply and demand, thus providing a valuable resource to improve energy use efficiency. The thesis is based on a novel idea which consists in using chemical compounds formed during peritectic transitions as TES materials. The term peritectic refers to reactions in which a liquid phase (L) reacts with at least one solid phase (α) to form a new solid phase (β). The reaction is reversible and takes place at constant temperature. Compared to the state-of-the-art in TES, peritectic compounds could provide outstanding volumetric energy density using a simple system technology, which makes them especially attractive for achieving a cost-effective TES. However, the development of peritectic-based TES technology is still at very early stage mainly due to the novelty of the idea. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is twofold. On one hand, the design and development of materials based on peritectic compounds suitable for TES applications, and on the other hand, the study of how these new materials interact with the structures that contain them in industrial applications, such thermal storage tanks, pipes, ducts and so on. In order to achieve the first goal, different kind of carbon/peritectic composite materials will be studied to solve problems that may appear in the peritectic formation process, mostly related to reversibility and energy density (e.g. phases separation phenomena or slow transformation kinetics). The second goal will be dedicated to carry on studies of compatibility of the new TES material with the alloys that are most commonly employed in the manufacturing of structures and components in contact with TES. A thoroughly study of corrosion and degradation processes of new materials in contact to different alloys with will be performed, and new innovative solutions based on protective barriers will be tested, in order to determine the techno-economic viability of such solutions.



    Requisites

    Qualification requirements: We are looking for candidates preferably with a master degree in Physics, Physic-Chemistry, Materials Engineering or other scientific disciplines in a related field. The candidate should be a good team player who can collaborate with other scientists. A highly motivated person with interest to the investigation and innovation will be incorporated into multidisciplinary team. He/She should also demonstrate strong capabilities to organize the work in order to achieve deadlines and project targets. Good knowledge of English would be appreciated and able to commute between Vitoria and San Sebastian (Spain).

    The Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) established in Bilbao is a world-class research centre on Applied Mathematics with a focus on interdisciplinary research in the frontiers of mathematics, attraction and training of talented scientists, development of new numerical and simulation methods, interaction with industry, and promotion of scientific and technological advances worldwide.

    Aiming to strengthen the Basque Science and Technology System, BCAM was created in September 2008 by the Basque Government through Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science. BCAM counts with around 70 researchers from over 20 different countries with experience in some of the most prestigious research centres on their area, organized in 5 research areas.     BCAM is a young research centre that is facing its consolidation phase.     The Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) established in Bilbao is a world-class research centre on Applied Maths with a focus on interdisciplinary research in the frontiers of mathematics, attraction and training of talented scientists, development of new numerical and simulation methods, interaction with industry, and promotion of scientific and technological advances worldwide.

CIC Energigune is seeking an experienced Researcher to engage in the Polymer and Li-S lines and belonging to the Cells and Electrochemistry Research Group.



    Main functions

    • Synthesis and characterization of polymer electrolytes • Proof of concept study of polymer-based solid lithium batteries • Characterize the materials using analytical instruments. • Collaborate in writing proposals to secure funding from government and industrial sources.



    Requisites

    • PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry or related fields. • Training and expertise in polymer preparation, and lithium batteries. • Experience in analysis of NMR, DSC, TGA, electrochemical work station, and scanning electron Microscopy. • A team player who can collaborate with other groups, technical centers, and industries. • Good verbal and written communication skills in English Experience in solid-state polymer electrolytes and energy storage technologies (e.x. Li-S systems) would be an added advantage.

    In order to start the PhD, the requirements are a Master Science in mechanical engineering.

    BCAM (www.bcamath.org), the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, is an interdisciplinary research centre founded in September 2008 under the sponsorship of the Department of Education, Universities and Research of the Basque government, the Regional Government of Bizkaia, the University of the Basque Country and Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Scientific Research. The centre is located in Bilbao, Spain.

    The Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) established in Bilbao is a world-class research centre on Applied Maths with a focus on interdisciplinary research in the frontiers of mathematics, attraction and training of talented scientists, development of new numerical and simulation methods, interaction with industry, and promotion of scientific and technological advances worldwide.

    Aiming to strengthen the Basque Science and Technology System, BCAM was created in Sept. 2008 by the Basque Government. BCAM obtained the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence award in 2013, by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

    BCAM counts with around 70 researchers from over 20 different countries with experience in some of the most prestigious research centres on their area, organized in 5 research areas. There are research personnel, PhD and postdoctoral students. The senior positions are permanent appointments.

    BCAM is a young research centre; this sense, the scientific strategy of the Centre is based on three Scientific Platforms that have been set up in order to establish an interdisciplinary system capable of facing the challenges of Mathematical Science in a broad manner by bringing together Mathematics, Engineering and Sciences:

    - Core in Applied Mathematics: PDE, Numerical Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Algebraic Geometry, Probability and Statistics.
    - Computational Mathematics: Modeling and computer simulations using numerical, stochastic and Monte Carlo methods.
    - Applications of Mathematics to Industry, Social Sciences and Health Sciences.
