Bizkaia’s university talent connects with reference sectors in the Basque Country

2021/04/22

  • 240 students from the three Basque universities have participated in online encounters together with 9 clusters and 11 companies

Bizkaia Talent continues with its effortss to bring univesity talent closer to the region’s cutting-edge companies and to enable these to promote and position themselves among the youth. To this end, and within the framework of the activities of the Talentia Skills programme, a programme of excellence for the development of transversal skills for students with the highest potential, a total of 12 sectorial encounters have taken place aimed at informing students about future trends in the labour market, the most requested profiles and the skills which are currently most in demand.

At these 12 encounters the sectors represented were the food sector (Basque Food Cluster and Bolton Food), art (Guggenheim Bilbao), architecture (Estudio Xortu), the automotive industry (ACICAE Cluster and Gestamp), bio-health (Basque Health Cluster and IMG Pharma Biotech), education (UPV/EHU research workers), energy (Energy Cluster and Ormazabal), machine-tools (AFM Cluster and DANOBAT Group), environment (Aclima Cluster, Sader and the Basque Association of Economists), mobility (Basque Country Mobility and Logistics Cluster), iron and steel industry (SIDEREX Cluster, IDOM and SIDENOR), and ICTs (GAIA Cluster and LIN3S). Former participants of the Talentia Skills programme now developing their careers in these sectors also took part by sharing their professional experiences.

240 students with diverse profiles from a range of academic fields from the three Basque universities (University of Deusto, Mondragon University and UPV/EHU) were given the opportunity to discover the attractions of each of these sectors, as well as the projects which the companies are currently developing and to find out at first hand which transversal skills are currently demanded by the companies, such as team-work, pro-activeness, knowledge of digital tools or the capacity to adapt to change, all of which are taking on a great importance to human resources professionals when evaluating the incorporation of professionals into their companies.

It is worth mentioning that one of the questions which companies have stressed the most is the fact that students take advantage of the academic stage to carry out professional internships, not only as a means to acquire experience but also as a way to identify what they like and dislike, with a view to being in a better position to take the best decisions with a view to their professional futures.
