    BCAM is a world-class research center on Applied Mathematics with a focus on interdisciplinary research in the frontiers of mathematics, attraction and training of talented scientists, development of new numerical and simulation methods, interaction with industry, and promotion of scientific and technological advances worldwide.
    Located in the Basque Country, it benefits from a long industrial tradition, and it is linked with the French Atlantic corridor, a region of excellence in Applied Mathematics. This context contributes to the task of building an excellence research center. BCAM counts with around 60 researchers from over 20 different countries with experience in some of the most prestigious research centers on their area, organized in 5 research areas and an administrative support team composed by 7 people.

    BCAM is a young research center that is facing its consolidation phase. In this sense, the scientific strategy of the center is based on three Scientific Platforms that have been set up in order to establish an interdisciplinary system capable of facing the challenges of Mathematical Science in a broad manner by bringing together Mathematics, Engineering and Sciences:
    * Core in Applied Mathematics: PDE, Numerical Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Algebraic Geometry, Probability and Statistics.
    * Computational Mathematics: Modeling and computer simulations using numerical, stochastic and Monte Carlo methods.
    * Applications of Mathematics to Industry, Social Sciences and Health Sciences.

    Main functions

    The gross annual salary of the Fellowship will be 18.000 €.
    It will then be on your own responsibility to make your yearly income declaration at the Bizkaia Treasury Agency.
    There is a moving allowance for those researchers that come from a research institution outside the Basque Country from EUR 1.000 to EUR 2000 gross.

    Applications are invited for a PhD student position, to work on a collaborative research project, to be carried out jointly at CIC nanoGUNE and CIC biomaGUNE, two high class research centers located in San Sebastián (Spain). The project revolves around the integration of plasmonic nanoparticles within optical sensing devices.



    Main functions

    The funded PhD thesis will focus on the integration of metal nanoparticles and supercrystals within an optical platform, to provide a miniaturized optical system for analyte identification and quantification, focusing on medical diagnosis and environmental monitoring.

    The main objectives of the thesis will be:

    i) Evaluation of the different functionalities that different types of gold nanoparticle

    assemblies may confer to the patterned substrate

    ii) Integration of nanostructured surfaces into a miniaturized device

    iii) Scientific and technological development of the optical platform

    iv) Device validation and determination of detection performance with real samples

    The work will be carried out at the Nanoengineering Group at CIC nanoGUNE and the Bionanoplasmonics Laboratory of CIC biomaGUNE, under the joint supervision of Prof. Andreas Seifert and Prof. Luis M. Liz-Marzán.



    Requisites

    A Masters degree in a relevant area of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering or Materials Science is required and experience in the fields of nanomaterials, optics or biotechnology is highly desirable.

    The position is for up to three years, starting no later than October 2017.

    Nuclear fusion is considered the energy of the future due to its almost unlimited resources, its inherent safety and the absence of greenhouse gases. One of the most important technological challenges for the implementation of this form of energy is the development of materials able to withstand the extreme conditions to which they will be exposed.
    The objective of this project is the development of oxidation resistant, self-passivating tungsten alloys with suitable thermal and mechanical properties for their application in future fusion reactors.
    The activity lies within the framework of a European project and will be performed in close collaboration with other European research centers. The work to be done by Ceit’s team is the manufacturing by powder metallurgy of tungsten alloys of different composition and their characterization. The material developed and optimized at Ceit will be sent to the collaboration institutions for subsequent test relevant for the application. The work envisages the optimization of the material developed so far, with special emphasis on its oxidation and thermo-shock resistance. The candidate will be familiarized with different powder metallurgical manufacturing techniques as well as with the most advanced materials characterization techniques.
    The candidate will perform a PhD thesis in the frame of this Project.

    The Division of Industry and Transport in Tecnalia is a European leader when it comes to R&D in maintenance. The Division has a strong international profile and works closely with industry.

    Operation and maintenance is a rapidly growing research area as it is recognized as an important enabler for the business performance by industry all over the world. For many industries maintenance costs are one of the biggest individual cost item. Effective maintenance can generate income for industry through better facility utilization and higher availability. Through well planned maintenance, external and internal operational risks can also be controlled and minimized. In general, operation and maintenance are critical issue for economic viability and smooth running of transportation and other engineering system.

    The presently applied maintenance strategies are mainly based on past experience and periodic inspections. However, the inspections do not effectively prevent unexpected failures of the network, especially since degradation rates are rather unpredictable. As a result, many maintenance activities are performed in a reactive way, which yields network unavailability and relatively high maintenance costs. In a large research project, we now aim to transition from reactive maintenance to (pro-active) predictive maintenance. This will be achieved by developing and utilizing a range of continuous monitoring systems (data capturing) and the associated prediction models (data analytics) for failures of infrastructure elements (e.g. switches, joints, level crossings, track section) and by continuously improving failure mode, effects and criticality analyses (FMECAs) and root cause analyses (RCAs). This will significantly reduce the uncertainty on the actual condition of the network elements. Assets already contain sensors and there is a significant amount of data on usage, failures, maintenance activities and performance available. However, this data does not always contain the most relevant parameters and is not always processed in the right way, which means that the amount of useful information obtained from the data is rather limited.

    The selected candidate will work with RAMS and LCC modeling along with condition assessment of engineering systems. The objective of the present PhD project is to develop data processing algorithms and associated diagnostic and prognostic methods for the different elements, based on all data sources available in the field. This will be achieved by taking the following steps. Firstly, an overview of all available types of data must be created. Data will be available from traditional maintenance-related sources (failures, maintenance activities), but also additional sources could be identified. The second step will be to develop methods for collecting and merging all different data types. The third step, which constitutes the core of this project, is to develop data processing methods that retrieve information on the actual state (diagnosis) or expected future failures (prognosis) of the asset elements.

    La beca de doctorado propuesta plantea el desarrollo de una solución de detección on-line capaz de determinar la calidad de la instalación de remaches ciegos en estructuras aeronáuticas (metálicas, de compuesto o híbridas).

    Descripción de la beca:

    Los remaches son elementos que permiten unir mecánicamente dos o más componentes. En la fabricación aeronáutica son numerosos los tipos de remache a los que se recurre para el ensamblaje de conjuntos. Entre ellos, se denominan remaches ciegos aquellos cuya instalación precisa acceder sólo por la parte frontal del conjunto. Esto significa una operación más económica, sencilla y fácil de automatizar.

    Sin embargo, cuando se instala un remache ciego en la actualidad no es posible la evaluación del mismo salvo mediante procesos muy lentos y equipos muy costosos. A menudo ni siquiera es posible realizar ningún tipo de evaluación. Con el fin de cumplir los criterios de seguridad se recurre a sobreestimar el número de remaches, provocando el aumento del peso de la estructura y el encarecimiento del proceso productivo. Es evidente pues que el potencial de los remaches ciegos no está siendo explotado.

    En este contexto, el trabajo a realizar mediante la presente beca tiene como objetivo desarrollar un sistema de evaluación on-line del proceso de instalación de remaches ciegos. Para ello se dotará al proceso de la capacidad de recoger datos sobre el desarrollo del mismo mediante la integración de sensores así como un algoritmo que evaluará de forma automática la calidad del remache instalado en base a la extracción y análisis de la información que proporcionan los sensores. Se trata pues de contenidos alineados con las necesidades demandadas y promovidas por los paradigmas actuales en torno a la Industria 4.0 y la fabricación inteligente.

    Esta beca se integra en las actividades que Tecnalia viene realizando desde hace años en la línea de ensamblaje de estructuras aeronáuticas encaminadas hacia la optimización de los procesos productivos y la inspección de los mismos. Algunos ejemplos de actividades realizadas son la detección automática de rebabas en el taladrado de aluminio mediante señales de máquina internas o la inspección no destructiva y semi-automática de la calidad remaches ya instalados mediante ultrasonidos. El trabajo actual forma parte de un proyecto europeo en curso dentro del programa Clean Sky-2 (www.cleansky.eu/) y estará supervisado por el Grupo de Fabricación de Alto Rendimiento de la UPV/EHU (www.ehu.eus/manufacturing/i...) que cuenta con gran experiencia investigadora en el ámbito de la ingeniería de fabricación y con el que Tecnalia lleva años colaborando.

    Para la beca se busca una persona dinámica, con iniciativa y autonomía, gran capacidad de análisis y dispuesto a desenvolverse en un entorno multidisciplinar. Es preciso dominar el inglés y tener interés por la programación con un fuerte componente de aplicación, en este caso a un problema de materiales y procesos de productivos.

    El objetivo de la beca es desarrollar soluciones pragmáticas y eficientes de programación, calibración y control de un robot bibrazo móvil. Este tipo de robots tiene una amplia aplicabilidad en las plantas del futuro, en particular en operaciones de ensamblaje de componentes. Pero todavía necesitan desarrollo y validación para que puedan ser desplegados en aplicaciones reales.



    La beca tratara de dar solución a dos de las principales mejoras necesarias:
    •Desarrollo de una metodología y programa de Calibración del robot para aumentar su precisión absoluta y así poder aplicarlo a operaciones de montaje aeronáutico.
    •Desarrollo y aplicación del concepto de “Skills-based programming” a robots bibrazos móviles para dotarles de habilidades reconfigurables, como paso imprescindible hacia más autonomía para su programación.
    •Los resultados del trabajo se aplicaron a casos concretos de ensamblajes para las plantas de Peugeot PSA y/o de Aernnova.



    Descripción de la beca:

    Este tipo de robots tiene una amplia aplicabilidad en las plantas del futuro. Pero todavía necesitan desarrollo y validación para que puedan ser desplegados en aplicaciones reales.

    La beca tratara de dar solución a dos de las principales mejoras necesarias:
    •Desarrollo de una metodología y programa de Calibración del robot para aumentar su precisión absoluta y así poder aplicarlo a operaciones de montaje aeronáutico: es necesario desarrollar y validar experimentalmente una solución de calibración geométrica adecuada a robots bibrazos móviles, apoyándose en sistemas de posicionamiento tipo laser tracker. Existen metodologías para robots industriales de 6 ejes, pero no para robots bibrazos. Esta parte de la beca estará centrada en técnicas de:◦modelización de robots
    ◦optimización multi-variables
    ◦análisis de factores de impacto
    ◦validación experimental


    •Desarrollo y aplicación del concepto de “Skills-based programming” a robots bibrazos móviles para dotarles de habilidades reconfigurables, como paso imprescindible hacia más autonomía para su programación. Estas “Skills” son como bloques de Logo que se pueden combinar entre ellos, configurar automáticamente para cada aplicación y ejecutarse en el robot. El objetivo de esta línea de trabajo es la de Easy-programming: minimizar al máximo la necesidad de expertos en robótica para poder aplicar un robot bibrazo a una nueva aplicación en planta. Esta parte de la beca estará centrada en técnicas de:◦Ontologías y semántica

    Descripción de la beca:

    El trabajo pretende abordar nuevas maneras de maximizar la confiabilidad y productividad de procesos de mecanizado actuales instalando sistemas de adquisición de datos de máquina-proceso y aplicando técnicas de analítica a datos masivos, que permitan analizar aspectos como el correcto diseño de una máquina y el estado de sus componentes para su aplicación de uso, los ratios de productividad y umbrales de mejora de uso de una máquina, y finalmente, aspectos relativos al propio proceso de corte como son la correcta elección de la herramienta de corte, la estrategia de mecanizado empleada y la predicción de la calidad de la pieza obtenible. El objetivo final del trabajo es generar una solución/herramienta que asesore o de soporte a los diseñadores y/o usuarios de centros de mecanizado.

    Para ello el doctorando deberá:
    1.Definir y validar la instrumentación requerida por centros de mecanizado para estudiar los procesos basándose en analítica de datos masivos ubicados en la nube.
    2.Desarrollar algoritmos que permitan analizar y optimizar aspectos productivos y de diseño de máquinas.

    Tras esta primera evaluación de diferentes procesos, materiales y aplicaciones, se seleccionarán a qué que mejor cumpla las expectativa y se estudiará a fondo para poder obtener piezas con la calidad y repetitividad requerida.

    Este proceso de estudio exhaustiva contará con apartados de simulación de proceso, diseño de experimentos para la optimización del proceso de fabricación, optimización del post procesado de las muestras (tratamientos térmicos, acabado superficial, mecanizado, recubrimientos,…

    Con todo esto se pretende tener un mapa de condiciones, de procesado, trayectorias de aporte, propiedades del material obtenido, y post tratamientos, que permita conocer la ventana de procesado más adecuada para la(s) aplicación(es) seleccionada(s).

    Este doctorado pretende desarrollar procesos de deposición de aluminio y sus aleaciones mediante técnicas de proyección térmica, para su aplicación en operaciones de reparación y mantenimiento de componentes de la misma composición en la industria aeroespacial.



    Se plantea como una actividad a desarrollar mayoritariamente en cooperación con el grupo de proyección térmica de TECNALIA. El grupo cuenta con una larga trayectoria en el desarrollo de procesos de combustión de alta velocidad, experiencia que ha dado lugar entre otras cosas, al desarrollo de una nueva tecnología de proyección por combustión de alta velocidad (HVOAF). Los estudios llevados a cabo hasta la fecha, nos han demostrado que esta nueva tecnología tiene un gran potencial para el procesamiento de recubrimientos metálicos de alta calidad y espesores superiores a los logrados con procesos convencionales de proyección térmica. El estudio de la idoneidad de esta tecnología para el procesamiento de aleaciones ligeras es un camino que apenas hemos comenzado a recorrer, con resultados muy prometedores hasta ahora.

    En una primera etapa, este trabajo de doctorado se centrará en la valoración experimental de las configuraciones de sistema existentes, empleando para ello aleaciones de Aluminio relevantes para el sector aeroespacial (AlSi10Mg, AlCuLi, AlMgLi, AlSiSc,..). En base a los resultados obtenidos, se mejorará la configuración del sistema actual (pistola de proyección).

    Tras esta primera etapa de optimización de proceso, se seleccionarán los materiales y/o aplicaciones más idóneos para la valoración de la tecnología y se estudiarán a fondo las condiciones de proceso para poder obtener piezas con la calidad y repetitividad requerida. Para ello, se realizará un estudio exhaustivo que contará con etapas de diseño de experimentos para la optimización de las condiciones de proceso en superficies planas, extrapolación a geometrías 3D representativas, caracterización de las propiedades mecánicas de las piezas recubiertas y optimización del post procesado de las muestras (tratamientos térmicos, acabado superficial por shot peening o mecanizado).

    Con todo esto, se pretende en primera instancia optimizar la configuración del sistema para el procesamiento de aleaciones de aluminio, y añadido a ello, tener un mapa de condiciones de proceso, propiedades del material obtenido y post tratamientos, que permitan conocer las ventanas de esta tecnología para la(s) aplicación(es) seleccionada(s).

    Actualmente está línea de investigación cuenta con diferentes proyectos y ofertas que ayudarían a destinar recursos a la TESIS: BIONIC-AIRCRAFT, IZADI, COLD SPRAY, PACnano.

    La tendencia MEA (More Electrical Aircraft) en aeronáutica, supone la sustitución paulatina de los elementos de actuación hidráulica por actuación eléctrica. Por motivos de seguridad y de bajo desarrollo tecnológico, todavía la actuación eléctrica está lejos de ser implantada de manera general en aeronaves. El campo de investigación que se abre en la línea de actuación eléctrica para aplicaciones aeronáuticas es inmenso. Las principales líneas de investigación y mejora son las siguientes:

    Requisites

    Main functions

    The safe passage of trains through tunnels and the integrity of the related infrastructure depend to a great extent on appropriate maintenance and having in place the measures that are needed to inspect various elements, including the rails. In order to detect and identify defects on the running surface of rails and the sub-surface, electromagnetic non-destructive (END) testing techniques have advantages over other inspection techniques.

    The position is part of a national research project being carried out in conjunction with several technology and industrial partners from the railway and infrastructure sectors. The sub-project that Ceit-IK4 is working on involves inspecting rails for cracks via magnetic non-destructive testing techniques.

    The candidate will be responsible for manufacturing a prototype for measuring, capturing and processing the data from the magnetic testing, working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary research team. The measuring system to be designed for the project will be embedded in an unmanned automatic inspection vehicle that has on-board data capturing and data processing systems.

    The candidate will acquire the following competencies: team work, programming, and electronic design.

    Requisites

    Main functions

    El objetivo de la tesis será desarrollar técnicas no destructivas de caracterización de materiales con ondas de microondas. Dentro de un grupo de trabajo multidisciplinar y con diversos perfiles, la labor del doctorando será investigar la iteración de diferentes materiales con las ondas de microondas, proponer sistemas de monitorización novedosos, diseñar e implementar estos sistemas a nivel de prototipo y testearlos. El objetivo final de grupo será desarrollar estos prototipos hasta una fase de producto dando respuesta a necesidades concretas de la industria.

    Requisites

    - Titulación: Cualquiera de las siguientes titulaciones de 5 años: Ingeniero Telecomunicación, Ing. Informáticos, Ing. Eléctrico e Ing. Electrónicos. También se admitirán Graduados de estas 4 ramas pero en el caso de los Graduados se precisa que hayan finalizado un Master en el momento de la incorporación.

    Requisites

    Dado que el agua es un recurso escaso, entre otras cuestiones debido al crecimiento de la población y a los efectos por el cambio climático, debe ser gestionada de una manera eficiente, cuyo objetivo principal es que el máximo volumen de agua que entra en la red llegue a sus puntos de consumo, minimizando las pérdidas en la mayor medida posible. 

    La tesis doctoral se centrará en el desarrollo de algoritmos novedosos de análisis de datos y machine learning para la predicción de consumo y detección de fugas, que faciliten la operación y la gestión de los sistemas de abastecimiento de agua.


    Requisites

    Graduado en Ing. Telecomunicación con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación / Licenciado en Ciencias Exactas / Graduado en Matemáticas con Master en Modelización e Investigación Matemática, Estadística y Computacional, o con Master en Ing. Telecomunicación.
